SUBTRACTION

a) Subtraction means:
  1. The Process of finding the difference between two numbers.
  2. To find the difference between two numbers by taking one away from the other.
  3. For example: Subtracting 4 from 9 leaves 5. ( 9 - 4 = 5 )
b) Other words of 'Subtraction':
     1.  Minus
     2.  Subtract
     3.  Take away
     4.  Less
c) Subtraction without regrouping
  1.  Subtract a 1-digit number from a 2-digit number
  2. Subtract a 2-digit number from a 2-digit number

  4. Subtract a 2-digit number from a 3-digit number
  5. Subtract a 3-digit number from a 3-digit number

ADDITION

a) Addition means:
  1. The Process of finding the sum of two or more numbers.
  2. To calculate the total of two or more numbers.
  3. For example: 3 + 4 = 7
  4. The total is called the sum of the numbers added.

  1. Sum
  2. Add
  3. Altogether
  4. Total
  5. Plus
  6. More
c) Adding two numbers without regrouping
  1. Add a 2-digit number and a 1-digit number
  2. Add a 3-digit number and a 1-digit number

DEFINITION OF MATHS.....

Arithmetic is the study of numbers. Maths covers a range, whole numbers, addition, division, metric conversions, ratios, etc. Historically, arithmetic and practical geometry are the oldest parts of mathematics. The four rules and the four basic operations of arithmetic are:
  • Addition
  • Subtraction
  • Multiplication
  • Division

HISTORY OF MATHS

Mathematics as a formal area of teaching and learning was developed about 5,000 years ago by the Sumerians. They did this at the same time as they developed reading and writing. However, the roots of mathematics go back much more than 5,000 years.
